Our Guru Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche's Departure

As many of you already know, in June of this year Mingyur Rinpoche left for an extended period of solitary retreat. What you may not know are the details of his departure.

In early June, 2011, Mingyur Rinpoche left his monastery in Bodhgaya, India to begin a period of extended solitary retreat. He departed in the middle of the night without telling anyone. He did not take any money or belongings, just the clothes he was wearing. The day after he left, his close friend and attendant, Lama Soto, found this letter in Mingyur Rinpoche's room.

Letter from Our Guru Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche upon Entering Retreat 2011

Dear friends, students, and fellow meditators,

By the time you read this letter, I will have begun the long retreat that I announced last year. As you may know, I have felt a very strong connection with the tradition of retreat since I was a young boy growing up in the Himalayas. Even though I didn't really know how to meditate, I would often run away from home to a cave nearby, where I would sit quietly and chant the mantra "Om Mani Peme Hung" over and over again in my mind. My love of the mountains and the simple life of a wandering meditator called to me even then.

Message from Dorje Palmo

Our Guru, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, has now officially begun his three year retreat that he announced last year. While Rinpoche will be apart from us physically over the next few years, he will continue to be with us in his mind and in his prayers. During this time, Rinpoche encourages his disciples and students to continue their practice and, importantly, to join with the center practices and do short retreats when possible. In support of Rinpoche’s wishes, the Headquarters Center plans to do a Green Tara Retreat this coming August with Lama Trinley from Rinpoche’s Phoenix Center. This weekend retreat will be dedicated to Mingyur Rinpoche for his good health and longevity.

May our Guru be always in our hearts and prayers.

Best wishes,

Dorje Palmo

President, Yongey Buddhist Center Headquarters

We dedicate the Green Tara Retreat to our guru, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche for good health, longevity and baring no obstacle during his three-year retreat.

Vajrasattva is the embodiment of the consciousness of all the Buddhas, appearing in the aspect of a white-colored deity specifically to purify living beings’ negativities. All our problems arise from previous negative actions. Through our relationship with Buddha Vajrasattva we can remove our bad karma and habits.

The practice of meditation and recitation of Buddha Vajrasattva is an extremely powerful method for purifying our impure mind and actions. In these sessions, we will focus on what it means to actually purify our bad karma and mind through the power of meditation and blessings. We will dedicate our merits to all the sentient beings.

Those who are interested in participating in the weekend retreats, please contact the Center at 408.263.2740 for more information.

President's Letter (July 2010)

Dear Dharma Brothers and Sisters:

Our precious Guru, Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, returned to his Center on April 26th and held teachings at our headquarters in Milpitas, California and later at our branch in Flushing, New York. We welcome our Guru's return and we are very thankful for his teaching and guidance.

Rinpoche announced while at the New York Branch that he will be entering a 3 year retreat in May of next year to fulfill a vow he made 10 years ago. He told us that during his retreat he will keep his students in his heart and in his prayers. Rinpoche's humor and compassion has touched everyone around him. He will have more teachings and stories to share with all his students around the world when he returns in 2014. Rinpoche encourages us to continue our mediation and daily practice and hopes that we will find time to take mini-retreats.

We all pray for our precious Guru Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche during his 3 year retreat and wish him good health and a speedy return.

Your Sister in the Dharma,
Dorje Palmo
President
